The Draft
My awesome fantasy team, The Green Sox in the MLBloggers fantasy league is set. My rotation and lineups are nice but my bench and relief pitchers are not so hot. I had to leave before I could draft my bench/ relievers so I guess I shouldn’t be complaining.
Braves World draft Prince Fielder with the first pick which I though was very interesting. My first two picks were my keepers, Tim Lincecum and Ryan Howard. With my third I was about to draft Mark Reynolds but I had some computer issues and it drafted a former Red Sox left fielder who’s last name is three letters. Ya you probably thought I ment Manny.
In the fourth I was going to pick either Javier Vazquez, Chone Figgins, or Josh Johnson. In the end I chose Josh Johnson to go with Tim Lincecum. Then in the fifth I picked Billy Buttler, the first baseman for the Royals who was on my team last year.
With the 119th pick I was trying to get someone at DH. I didn’t end up putting him there but I picked Jason Kubel as my right fielder.Then in the seventh I got J.D. Drew’s younger brother Stephen Drew as my starting shortstop.
In the eighth I got someone on my team last year. I believe he was a steal for an eighth round pick, On the Boston Red Sox, number 34 . . . DAVID ‘BIG PAPI’ ORTIZ! Now you see why I moved Kubel from DH to right. I think Papi will regain Papi form and hit 35-40 home runs and drive in 100 plus.
In round nine I got the former best prospect in the Red Sox, the no-hit kid, Clay Buchholz who is going to win the fifth spot (sorry Wakefield) but is the third man in my rotation. In the tenth I got former Padre Kevin Kooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuzzzzzzzmanoff. I will probably keep him on my roster but I would like Adrian Beltre or Mark Reynolds or even Troy Glaus.
Then in the eleventh and twelfth I drafted a pair of Cubs teammates, Geovany Soto and Marlon Byrd. I always though that Byrd should be playing backup but then when I really looked into his stats I wanted him.
In the unlucky 13th round I got Dice-K who I think will come back with his 2008 form, when he almost won the Cy Young. In the 14th I drafted a guy who might start the season on the DL, Freddy Sanchez. Sanchez though will do better this year since A.) he is out of Pittsburgh and B.) he is playing with the Giants.
In the 15th round my friend came over and since he is an Indians fan I drafted Matt LaPorta who I might use as trade bait. In the 16th I drafted another guy on my team last year (who helped me out by hitting two grand slams in a game), Josh Willingham.
In the 17th I drafted yet another guy I drafted the year before, Justin Duchscherer. Only difference is that last year he was not healthy, this year though he is and I can put him under starter, reliever, or pitcher.
In the the 18th I drafted speedster, Carlos Gomez. In the 19th I drafted my first reliever, Ryan Madson. Then in round 20 I drafted Nationals ace (you know you team is bad when your ace gets drafted in the 20th round), Jason Marquis.
In the 21 round I drafted another bad teams ace, and 2009 all-star Zach Duke. In round 22 I drafted someone ESPN suggested, Eric Young Jr. who will be one of my main stolen base guys.
In round 23 I got Nick Blackburn as my last starting pitcher. Then in round 24 I got Blue Jays shortstop Alex Gonzalez. In the 25th I got the Padres, Tony Gwynn Jr.
After that I had to go to the Rodeo which was AWESOME!!!! Something that was not awesome was who I got.
I set it up so I could get Hideki Okajima and Ramon Ramirez. I got them I got Chad Durblin, and Gabe Kapler after Okajima and Ramirez.
Then though I got Steve Pearce (1B), Greg Burke (RP), Adam Rosales (3B), Ryan Roberts (2B), Sean Green (RP), George Kottaras (C), Sergio Escalona (RP), Renyel Pinto (RP), and Jeff Stevens (RP)
I’ll be honest the only guy I knew out of those is George Kottaras because he use to play for Boston but now plays for the Brew Crew. Ohh well thats what I get for not staying I guess.
I need a closer for sure and there are a few players I would like to have had but one things for sure I am winning it all!

Pitching Problems?

I planed writing this entry primarily about Josh Beckett’s stupid suspension and Jon Lester’s poor start. But since this morning Dice-K went on the D.L. and Tim Wakefield flirted with history.
Josh Beckett
On Easter Sunday Josh Beckett was pitching against the Angels with Bobby Abreu up to bat. After Beckett stood on the mound for about ten seconds Abreu called for time and the umpire granted it for him. As Abreu step out Beckett had just started his wind up and Beckett threw the pitch at Abreu’s head. Abreu played for the Yankees the last few years so that might have come into play. Then the benches cleared.
If Beckett had not thrown the ball and stopped in the middle of his windup there was a chance of injury and no one wants that to happen.
He ended up getting suspended and fined which was just a joke. It is obvious the ball Beckett pitched to Abreu slipped out of his hand. I mean just look at the replays. It slipped!
If Beckett did mean to hit Abreu in the head he is a jerk. I mean the Angels are going threw though times after the death of Nick Adenhart. I do not know how you could do that. However I still think it was an accident.
When Beckett heard the news he was shocked. Beckett is currently appealing the suspension. Since the lengths of the appeal process takes a while it is very likely that Beckett will still start against the Orioles Saturday.
So it is pretty official unless Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for MLB implements the suspension he will be the most hatted man in Red Sox Nation.
Jon Lester
Jon Lester has experienced the ups and downs of his major league carer. Lester has survived cancer and pitched a no-hitter. Yet now Lester might be experience what seems to be the first of his lows.
I am not sure what to think of Lester’s poor start. Is he just not an April guy or is this serious. Was last year just a fluke? I hope not! I doubt it is serious. I mean it is not like Lester has been pitching with a broken arm and I am 100 percent sure that last year was not a fluke.
Lester never really had a true follow up year after his rookie year due to his cancer and for me last year was like a second rookie year for me. So maybe now Lester is just experiencing a sophomore slump.
In eleven innings this year Lester is zero and two with a 9.00 ERA and has struck out ten. Lester in my opinion did better in his second game but come could argue that he did better.
In his first game against the Rays Lester pitched five innings and gave up eight hits, five runs, walked two, and struck out five.
In his second game against the Athletics Lester pitched six innings and gave up ten hits, six runs, no walks, and struck out two. Lester is scheduled to pitch on Sunday against the Orioles.
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Dice-K pitched just one inning last night against the A’s and gave up five runs. He ended up leaving the game after the first inning with what appeared to be arm fatigue. We now know he has a strained shoulder which is pretty much just arm a fatigue.
It is possible that this injury was because of pitching in the World baseball Classic. Dice-K pitched a lot for team Japan in the WBC. Japan made it to the finals and won it all again and Dice-K pitched 14.2 innings in three games.
Dice-K was hurt last year and was in Cy Young talks. So I am not nervous
or worried about this injury. If Dice-K did not get hurt he probably would have won twenty games last year.

I looks like Justin Masterson will be Dice-K’s replacement in the rotation. Last night Masterson threw four innings for the Sox. So far this year Masterson is zero and zero with seven strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA.
I am really not worried about Dice-K. The only thing that makes me upset is the fact that he is on my fantasy team and now I have three starters on the D.L.
Tim Wakefield
The Red Sox bullpen needed a day off after Dice-K only pitched one inning yesterday . . . and they did. Tim Wakefield had a no hitter through 7.1 innings till Kurt Suzuki broke it up with a clean single.
Wakefield’s near no-hitter was practically a tribute to Jackie Robinson. He wore 42. He was making his 402 MLB start. He was 42 years old. He gave up 4 hits and 2 runs. He struck out 4 and walked 2. I mean that is pretty crazy.
Of course as soon as I turn on the T.V. I see one out and then the hit. So I am probably one of the most hatted persons in Red Sox Nation. So you guys better not tell anyone about this.
The other day a kid on my baseball team said it was easy to hit a home run off of Tim Wakefield. He was wrong not just about the game but about his whole carer. Wakefield has not given up a big fly so far this year and in 2,870 carer innings pitched Wakefield has give up just 362. Meaning he gives up one home run almost once every eight innings. Okay that is not the best but lets change innings to games. Wakefield has pitched in 543 games. Meaning he gives up one home run every 1.5 game. Okay so maybe he was kind of right.
Wakefiled also showed me. Yesterday I said in the playoffs Jon Smoltz should join the rotation and move Wakefield to the bullpen because more hitters are learning how to hit the knuckleball. Boy, I was wrong!
So Boston we kind of have a problem. Our ace is suspended, our second ace is in a slump, our third ace is hurt, and out forth ace is well awesome!

World Baseball Classic- Red Sox Style
First- I’m sorry I didn’t blog yesterday I am taking this boring five day test over math, writing, reading comprehension, science, and tons more.
Second- The real news in baseball isn’t the World Baseball Classic, it is Barry Bonds! Click here to read this shocking story about him.
Third- Jeff Kent the legendary second baseman retired today. Kent has a pretty good shot at getting into the baseball hall of fame. More on that soon hopefully.
Forth- Jonathan Pabelbon avoided arbitration by signing a one year, $6.25 million dollar deal. Boston also signed Javier Lopez. Theo Epstein has yet to go in to arbitration with any player since becoming G.M. of the Red Sox. More on that soon.
Fifth- The Dodgers signed Jonathan Broxton and Russell Martin avoiding arbitration.
Sixth- The Red Sox traded David Aardsma to the Mariners for Fabian Williamson.
The Boston Red Sox have eleven major league players and five minor league players on the World Baseball Classic provisional rosters.
Jason Bay- Bay played for Canada in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. In three games Bay hit .455, with zero home runs, drove in none, and had five hits. Last season Bay hit .286, with 31 home runs, drove in 101, and had 165 hits. Bay will be a great move for team Canada. While he didn’t have great stats in 2006 I think he will have a good 2009 World Baseball Classic.
George Kottaras- Kottaras will join Jason Bay on team Canada. Kottaras didn’t play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Last season in three games with the Red Sox he hit .200, had one hit, with no home runs, RBI’s, or stolen bases. The Red Sox will watch Kottaras carefully as a test to see how he does against major league talent.
Javier Lopez- Lopez will play for team Puerto Rico. Lopez did not participate in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Last season with Boston he had a two and zero record, with a 2.43 ERA, and 38 strikeouts. Lopez should help team Puerto Rico. He would give team Puerto Rico a pretty good relief pitcher.
Mike Lowell- Lowell will join Javier Lopez on team Puerto Rico. Lowell will play in the World Baseball Classic for his first time. Last year with Boston he hit .274, with 17 home runs, 73 RBI’s, and had 115 hits. The Red Sox will watch Lowell closely to see how his hip is. If it gets bad they may tell Lowell to sit out a game or sit on the bench for the rest of the tournament. I think his hip will be fine though.
Daisuke Matsuzaka- Dice-K will play for team Japan. Dice-K played in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He had three wins no losses, an ERA of 1.28, and ten strike outs. Dice-K was a vital part in helping Japan win in 2006. He also won MVP in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Last year with the Red Sox he had a record of 18-3, with 154 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.90. I think Dice-K will do fine in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Hideki Okajima- Okajima will join Dice-K on team Japan. Okajima didn’t play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Last season he had a three and two record, with an ERA of 2.61, 60 strikeouts, and one save. Okajima will be great playing for Japan. he could help them to win another title, but the USA will win.
David Ortiz- Ortiz will play for team Dominican Republic. In 2006 while playing in the 2006 World Baseball Classic he hit .150, with three home runs, five RBI’s, and three hits in twenty at bats. Having three hits and three home runs means that all of his hits were home runs. In 2008 with the Red Sox he hit .264, with 23 home runs, 89 RBI’s, and 110 hits. Ortiz has a hurt wrist so he might not be able to play. He also is listed on the list of Red Sox players in the classic but not on the list of players for team Dominican Republic on MLB.com which is strange.
Dustin Pedroia- Pedroia will play for my favorite team, team USA! Pedroia did not play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Last season he hit .326, with 17 home runs, 83 RBI’s, and stole twenty bases. He also won a golden glove, a silver slugger, and a MVP. Pedroia should be a upgrade for team USA. In 2006 the USA had Chase Utley at second base.
Ramon Ramirez- Roman Ramirez will possibly join David Ortiz on team Dominican Republic. Ramirez didn’t play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Ramirez was traded from Kansas City to Boston for Coco Crisp this offseason. While with the Royals last year he had a record of three and two, with a 2.64 ERA, one save, and 70 strikeouts. The Red Sox will look at him if David Ortiz plays to see if any chemistry forms between them. As we all know ( Well not the Y*****s) chemistry wins championships.
Kevin Youkilis- Youkilis will join Dustin Pedroia on team USA making the left side of the infield all Red Sox. Youkilis did not play in the 2006 World Baseball Cassic. Last season Youk hit .312, with 115 RBI’s, 29 home runs, and stole three bases. He also started at first base in the 2008 all star game at Yankee Stadium. Youk will be a great ascent to team USA in 2009.
The World Baseball Classic is a time where Cubs and White Sox, Dodgers and Angels, and even Red Sox and Y*****s (Hey I’m serious about not putting the Y word in my entries) unite and cheer for Pedroia, Jeter, Derrek Lee, Carlos Quentin, Joe Saunders, and Jonathan Broxton on team USA.
Random Junk
Okay it is really not junk.
1. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day everyone. I think it is fitting to have Barack Obama go in to office the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I must say I supported John McCain, but we must congratulate Mr. Obama on his historical achievement. We also must support him on being the next president of the U.S.A. So congrats Mr. Obama I hope you do well.
2. The teams for the Super Bowl are set. Yesterday the Arizona Cardinals upset the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25. The Cardinals were 9-7 in the regular season while the Eagles were 9-6-1. My Patriots were 11-5 and didn’t make the playoffs. The other team that got in was the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-14. A while back I said the Steelers would beat the Giants in the Super Bowl. I still think the Steelers will win it all. I can’t wait for the Super Bowl and the commercials!
3. The Chicago Cubs traded outfielder, Felix Pie to the Orioles. In exchange the Cubs got Garrett Olson and prospect Henry Williamson. I think the Orioles got the better of the deal. Last season Pie hit .241, with one home run, ten RBI’s, and stole three bases. Olson had a record of nine-ten, with a 6.65 ERA, and 83 strike outs. Williamson in A ball had a record of zero-one, an ERA of 3.72, with three saves, and 42 strikeouts. Olson could compete with Sean Marshall for the fifth spot in the rotation.
4. The World Baseball Classic Rosters will be announced this evening. Some players who will play for team U.S.A. are Dustin Pedroia, Derek Jeter, Roy Oswalt, Jake Peavy, Brad Hawpe, Grady Sizemore, Ryan Braun, and David Wright. For team Canada Justin Morneau will play. I think Jason Bay will play for team Canada too. For team Dominican Republic Alex Rodriguez will play and David Ortiz will try to play. For team Japan Dice-K and Ichiro will play. The classic looks like a good one. I think team U.S.A. will win though.
5. Today in the NBA America will find out who will be the forth dunker in the 2009 Sprite Slam Dunk challenge. For the first time ever America got to vote for who should be the forth dunker, Joe Alexander, Rudy Fernandez, or Russell Westbrook. I voted for Russell Westbrook because I think Alexander needs to work on just being a better player than a better dunker. Fernandez plays on the Portland Trail Blazers and I don’t like the Trail Blazers that much. Another reason I voted for Westbrook is because the team he plays on, the Oklahoma City Thunder, as of January 19th has a record of eight-34. I think it could make the Oklahoma City Thunder feel a lot better. The winner will face off against Rudy Gay, Nate Robinson, and defending dunk champion “Superman” Dwight Howard.
Second Jobs
Dustin Pedroia- Basketball Player- Never
Dustin Pedoria is five foot nine inches . . . according to MLB.com some say Pedoria is 5’5 and others say he is 5’11. Being 5’9 or what ever doesn’t make you qualified to be a basketball player. To play basketball you need to be at least six feet. Also why mess with perfection. Pedoria has won a golden glove, a silver slugger, a rookie of the year, and a MVP in just two full major league seasons.
Daisuke Matsuzaka- Ambassador form Japan to the U.S.A.- Maybe
Dice-K was born in Tokyo, Japan and all of the United States of America and Japan know who he is. Some love him, the city of Boston. Then some hate him, the Bronx. Ryozo Kato is currently the ambassador. One thing Dice-K will have to do though to become the ambassador is to learn English. Dice-k is getting there but still needs some work.
Milton Bradley- Anger Management Teacher- Never
Bradley who just signed with the Chicago Cubs has thrown a bottle into the stands, argued with umps tons of times, yelled at fans and players, and thrown bags full of baseballs. One time while he was with the San Diego Padres he cost them a playoff spot because he argued with an ump and got hurt. He needs anger management classes before he can be a teacher.

Glavine to Boston?!?
Tom Glavine a low risk high reward player said he felt good after throwing of the mound for the first time since elbow and shoulder surgery in August. Glavine is a local guy according to Julia (Julia your “dream” came true) over at Julia’s Rants. Glavine’s longtime teammate John Smoltz recently signed with the Red Sox. Glavine, a free agent, made thirteen starts last season. He went two and four, with 37 strikeouts, and a ERA 5.54. Tom Glavine is 42 years old. Glavine is a sure first ballot hall of famer he has 305 carer wins, an ERA of 3.54, and has 2,607 strikeouts. Glavine has played twenty-two seasons with the Braves on two different occasions and the New York Mets. He has won twenty games five times. While Glavine is a great player and I am sure he would love to go to the Red Sox, but Boston already has eight starters in Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Dice-K, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny, Smoltz, Clay Buchholz, and Michael Bowden. Smoltz though could come out of the bullpen and I think Clay could too. As for Bowden he’ll come up from AAA in mid-season. He would probably cost a around the amount of Smoltz and is better. Am I saying that I would rather have Glavine then Smoltz? No, Smoltz will not pitch till June but he can be a starter or come out of the bullpen which I wish every pitcher could. Glavine will should sign with a team with young pitchers, the Rays, Twins, A’s, D-Backs, Reds, Pirates, Brewers, Nationals, Marlins, or maybe even the Padres. he also could resign with the Braves who have signed Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami. The Braves also traded for former Chicago White Sox, Javier Vazquez. Vazquez is listed as the Braves ace on Braves.com don’t get that one. I would put my money on the Brewers or the Braves. The Brewers lost C.C. Sabathia to the Yankees. Ben Sheets, the other Brewers ace is still on the market. One game I would love to see, Red Sox vs. Brewers, Jon Smoltz vs. Tom Glavine, at Fenway Park.

Baldelli, Penny, Smoltz, Saito, and Kotsay
First- Sorry I didn’t blog the past few days, I had a ton of home work.
Second- Wow. A lot of news since I haven’t been blogging.
Third most of those moves have been by the Red Sox
Roco Baldelli
Roco Baldelli signed with the Red Sox on a $500,000 with some performance incentives. Roco played for the Tampa Bay Rays last year. Roco grew up in Rhode Island only 50 miles away from Fenway Park. Baldelli will probably be the forth outfielder unless the Red Sox trade Jacoby Ellsbury for catching help. Which sadly means if that happened Jason Varitex wouldn’t be coming back. Baldelli had rare mitochondrial disease, but got an update and the disease he now has is highly treatable. Baldelli will wear number five. The first Red Sox since Nomar Garciaparra. Baldelli is 27 years old. This year Baldelli won the Tony Conigliaro award, given to the player that overcomes adversity. Baldelli has been know for his strong character, spirt, and is a great influence in the clubhouse.
Brad Penny
Brad Penny officially became a Red Sox today, on a one year deal. He passed his physical and will join the rotation in spring. Penny was an all-star in 2006 and 2007 with the Dodgers. In 2008 he was hurt. Penny will get payed $5 million dollars plus performance incentives up to $3 million. Penny is 30 years old. Brad Penny has a carer record of 94-75, a 4.06 ERA, and 1,032 strikeouts. The Red Sox rotation is now set, Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Dice-K, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny, and Jon Smoltz by June (more on him in a second). Penny spent nine years in the National League before joining the Red Sox.
Jon Smoltz
Jon Smoltz signed the offer sheet from the Red Sox. The deal is worth $5.5 million plus incentives which could bring the total to $10 million dollars. Smoltz will not be able to play till June. Smoltz is 41 years old and has played with the Braves his whole carer, 21 years before joining the Red Sox. Smoltz has a 210-147 carer record, a 3.26 ERA, 3,011 strike outs, and 154 carer saves. One thing is will he start or be in the pen. I think Smoltz would be the ultimate setup man in the Boston bullpen.
Takashi Saito
Takashi Saito signed with the Red Sox on a one year deal with a club option for 2010. I found this out when I was working on this entry. Saito was the Dodgers closer last year and will now be a setup man/ back up closer. Saito was hurt for most of 2008. Satio’s deal is worth between $1.5 million and $2.5 million. He could earn up to $7 million if he does all of his incentives. Saito is 38 and will join Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and maybe Jon Smoltz in a great Boston bullpen. Saito will also join Dice-K and Okajima as three Japanese born players on the same team.
Mark Kotsay
Mark Kotsay resigned with the Red Sox on a one year, $1.5 million dollar deal. The deal would also include incentives that are unknown. Kotsay was a vital clog during the Red Sox postseason run last year. When Mike Lowell went down, Youk moved to third and Kotsay who plays outfield most of the time moved to first. Last year in 22 games for Boston Kotsay hit 19 hits, zero home runs, 12 RBI’s, and had a .226 batting average. Kotsay has played 12 years with the Marlins, Padres, A’s, Braves, and Red Sox. Kotsay had zero errors in the outfield and one error at first base last year.

Red Sox, Yankees, Rays- Rotation
First- WOW! Today is the slowest day in sports ever. So slow I was going to put this story up around spring training.
Second- Some of my NFL predictions were off, but who would have thought that the Chargers would have beat the Colts.
Third- My Celtics better start another streak. If they win tonight against the Knicks it will be a two game win streak.
Now to the Entry.
Who will win the A.L. will it be the Rays, Sox, or that team in New York (I’m to mad at them for some reason to say their name). I will lock at every thing from the players to their ballparks to their fans.

The Yankees have two real aces along with one ace. To be a real ace you have to be an ace no questions asked. To be an ace you only need some people to think your an ace. C.C. and A.J. are real aces while Wang is just an ace. The Red Sox have three real aces being Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K. They also have an ace being Brad Penny. they Rays have two real aces being Shields and Kazmir. Garza is an ace while Price is a future ace. Joba needs to stay in the bullpen so if I were the Yankees I would get Smoltz or someone and move Joba to the ‘pen. The Red Sox need to have a sixth man ready like Clay or Masterson in case Penny or Beckett gets hurt. I would start Clay in the bullpen at first. Masterson should stay in the bullpen. Bowden needs half a year then the Sox should call him up in the summer. The Rays just need to get better every year. Their rotation is great, just not ready to compete with the rotations of Boston and New York.

have vets., young talent, guys in there prime, a good minor
league system and $$$$$. With young talent Jacoby Ellsbury,
Jed Lowire, Justin Masterson, Jon Lester,and Dustin Pedoria.
Vets Mark Kotsay, Paul Byrd, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitex,
Mike Lowell, and Sean Casey. Guys in there prime like Jason
Bay, J.D. Drew, Josh Beckett, Dice-K, Paps, Manny Delcarmen
(the new manny), Papi, Youk, and Oak.The Yanks will stink
will the steinbreniner bros. because they stink! The rays
will stink because of no vets. but the o’s and jays will
compete by 2012. The Sox will win 08 and i honestly think
that as a baseball fan.
